Its BLACK FRIDAY once again.
Its been trending everywhere, every shop is offering black Friday sales, I trust Naija babes wey no wan carry last, they want to get their hands on juicy deals, who no like cheap articles? And I also trust Nigerian babes na, every new thing we come across on social media, we use it without bothering to know its meaning and origin including NEW GRAMMER.
As for me, I'm among that class of women, you know that 'top 5 percent' who don't like to get lost and always find their feet in books, yea- the top 5 percent that reads, the top 5 percent you need to join. We don't like to say what we don't know, we don't use words and phrases that are alien, we don't want to get embarrassed by our kids (You know kids can sabi ask questions na)
" Aunty Uche I won't wear my school uniform to school today, it is black Friday! but do we really need to wear black? "
"Aunty what is black Friday?"
" Mummy is it not only when somebody dies that we wear black?"
We 'top 5' despite our 'Relationship status’, have a permanent affair with GOOGLE, or its brothers.
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving (I hope someone won't tell me she did thanksgiving in church on Sunday...........), it is the first day after the last major holiday before Christmas
Thanksgiving is the last major holiday before Christmas ( and its not an African tradition)
It is celebrated annually on the last Thursday of November, and this year, it fell on the 26th of November
Some sources say that the term ' Black Friday' originated from the Philadelphia police department, it was used in a newspaper article to describe the experience of the Philadelphia police department traffic squad on the Friday after thanksgiving. That day is usually hugely marked by the worst traffic jam and every policeman is always on duty.
An alternative story claims that Black Friday is the day that retailers start recording profits in the year (in accounting jargon, moving from being "in the red" to "in the black") after operating at a loss from January through November
Whichever is the case, we are so glad the Friday turned black.
Wikipedia says that black Friday marks the unofficial beginning of Christmas shopping. Shops are slashing their prices, and there are huge giveaways everywhere, so put on your shopping fingers and start clicking away- Konga, Kaymu, Jumia, Ngalaba, Mama Emeka etc. every shop has something to offer, but remember, your pocket pays the price and Xmas shopping has just begun.
